GRASS PLOTS ON STREETS

ASSISTANCE FOR RESIDENTS PROPOSAL BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. The possibility of some action on the Council’s part to assist residents who were endeavouring to maintain in good order the grass plots along the road in front af their houses was under discussion at last night’s Borough Council meeting.

The Mayor said that damage had been done to some of the plots near the Foresters’ Hall on Saturday night by cars, and it was a question whether the Council was to give any consideration to those residents who wished to keep the road in front of their houses in order

Cr. Watson suggested that places round dance hails should be given some consideration with regard to parking, the Mayor pointing out that there was already a parking area between the Foresters’ and Lrdl Halls. Cr. Judd suggested the enforcement of lighting on cars parked outside such areas as that in question, where parking without lights was permitted. People would not be inclined to park cars elsewhere if they had to keep lights, on. Following a suggestion by the Mayor that people making and levelling grass plots outside their .homes should be given some such assistance as a supply of river silt. Cr. Carthew proposed that the Works Committee be asked to bring dow r n a report, as this was a. tiling to be encouraged in the town.

The Town Clerk proposed to Inspect the parking areas and bring down a report as to the amendment of the By-laws regarding parking without lights, and in the meantime notice of motion could be given for the desired amendment. It was eventually decided that as a recommendation to the Works Committee. in order to encourage the planting of grass plots, it be the policy of the Council to level the ground when labour was available, to an extent to be laid down by .he Works Committee.
