The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING MONDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1939. THE PAHIATUA SHOW.

TJi© .success of’ the Pahiatua Show cn Saturday bears witness to th_ c-oM-mued vitality of the ag'icultura* and pastoral industries of this disluct, and such a show is the chief occasion when the importance of these industries is brought home to the public as a* whole. A show is a kind of district stocktaking—a review of what is being done in industries vital to the life of the district, and as such serves a valuable purpose in creating and maintaining interest in these industries. For the competitor it is at once a standard and a. stimulant. By enabling farmers to see whether or not they are improving their stock it gives them lines to follow in the future, and helps them to correct faults and to aim with greater certainty at perfection in their flocks and herds. By competition too, it encourages improvement and stimulates the desire for perfection. The breadth and variety of interest in an agricultural nad pastoral show also makes it a rallying point at which the people of town and country areas can foregather and exchange ideas to their mutual prciit. The primary and secondary industries of a district are always closely linked in their mutual prosperity. The entries this year in the show reached record heights, and in quality too the stock entered was well above the usual.

The judges were particularly finpressed with this latter aspect, and it speaks well tor the prosperity of -the district that quality of entries can compare so favourably with that seen at larger centres. In the competitions the entries were large in number, and here again some veryfine animals were seen. This branch of the Show's activities, which is becoming more popular every year, serves a. valuable purpose in creating and maintaining interest in the hack and the improving of its breed, and in this respect i s much moro than a mere draw for the crowd. There is no doubt that the A. and 11,.l 1 ,. Show, far from becoming oldfashioned, or even tending to become obsolete, is increasing in popularity every year, and with an in.

creasing membership, it is certain that the Pahiatua .A. and P. Association will in the fntnre go on from strength to strength.
