FIFTY YEARS AGO.

MORE TOLL-GATES. (From the “Pahiatua Stai” oi February 12th, 1889). At the County Council meeting on Saturday, Cr. Gardner said he had been informed in Mast erton that the Wairarapa North County intended erecting another toll-gate at the Hawera Road so soon as the railway came through to Eketaliuna. They considered they would get enough out of the gate to put the whole road to Masterton in repair. He thought the Council should take some action in the matter, and if they persisted :n the erection of the gate this Council should erect one immediately on this side. Cr. Whitcombe moved and Cr. Miller seconded: ThaT m the event of the Wairarapa North County erecting a toll-gate on the northern boundary of their County, this Council erect one on the southern boundary of the County, and charge four times the toll charged at the Ngawapurua gate; residents in the Pahiatua County to have a free pass, such pass not to be transferable. The chairman moved, seconded by Cr. Pinfold: That this Council, having heard that the North County intend erecting a toll-gate at Hawera, would ask them to consider that it is very undesirable to erect such a, gate ; and if they persist, this Council will erect a gate on this side. Bv permission, CT.' Whitconibe’s resolution was withdrawn and the chairman’s was put and carried.
