His relative mildness of si i vice enabled Malfroy to run 5—2 then 5—4. The New Zealander did much, running to capture the set. Mako. in ihe second set, served more fiercely, forcing Malfroy to resort to lobbing, to which Mako was merciless. Malfroy s best defence was drop sfcots. but the American’s legginess and reach often neutralised this. Both were below form. Malfroy, in tb© fourth set, found it paid to come into the net and volley, but there were long rallies in tbe glaring sun. In the fifth set Mako lasted better. A full gallery at the centre court saw Mrs. Hopman test out the strength of Mrs Wills-Moody, who, it was generally assumed, was waning. The Australian kept the rallies going gamely and easily matched the American’s driving, blit just lacked that purposefulness of finish which Mrs Wills-Moody produced when in difficulties.
