MAYOR MAY RESIGN

A recommendation by the Mayor (Sir Ernest Davies) to a special meeting of ♦‘he City Council this afternoon that city rates be increased 2p! -n the £ was defeated in somewhat sensational circumstances The rates lastyear were 4s 3Jd in the £. The Mayor said that tho proposed increase was based not on accounts over which the council had control, but on increased levies made by the Hospital Board and the Drainage Board. Councillor Coakley moved, an amendment that the rates remain as at present. Councillor Fee refrained, from voting biit was called upon., to vote. He voted for tho amendment, which was carried by one vote. “I take this as a vote of want of confidence in myself, j will therefore take time to consider my position,” said tb© Mayor.
