OLD SETTLER PASSES

MR, PHILIP FAUVEL. The death of Mr Philip Fauvel last week removes another of the old settlers. Deceased was born on October 25, 1852, in Jersey, Channel Islands, and at the age of 15 he commenced his apprenticeship at sea. He migrated to New Zealand in the year 1873. After following various callings he was appointed to a position in the Government Insurance Office, resigning this to take up an appointment with E. W. Mills and Co., hardware merchants, in Wellington. After ten years he settled with his wife and family of six at Kaiparoro, being cne of the original settlers. During the early days of the district he held the position of accountant for the firm of J. 'Jones and Co., in Eketa<huna, and later served in a similar capacity at the sawmill of Mr A. Falkner at Ivaiparoro. He took a keen interest in the advancement of the Kaiparoro district, and was instrumental in securing the first school facilities there. On the loss of his wife in 1908 he spent three years in England, and, re-marrving, returned to live in retirement in Palmerston North. He was a keen supporter of and worker for the Ancient Order of Foresters, being a P.D.C.R. of the Wellington district. He is survived by his widow, three daughters (Mrs M. Knight, Mrs W. Hicks and Mrs H. Elliott) and one son (Mr Philip Fauvel, of Eketahuna). Two daughters predeceased him. The funeral, which took_ place at Eketahuna on Thursday, was a representative one. The Rev. L. Ives conducted a service in the Anglican Church and officiated at the graveside. Bro. Edwards, P.D.C.R., conducted the Foresters’ buiial service. The pall-bearers -were grandsons of the deceased, Messrs D. and K. Fauvel, A. and G. Elliott, K. Hicks and J H. Earl. A' large number of wreaths were received.
