LOCAL BODY MERGERS
MORE EVIDENCE TO BE HEARD. A statement that the Pariiamentary Committee which heard evidence on the Bocal Government (Amalgamation Schemes Bill) would be set up again during the coming session of Parliament with tin* object of reviving the Bill and hearing further evidence- was- made on Saturday by the. Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. W. E. Parry. The Minister said that there was no burry for the Bill, which was an important measure. He wanted the best possible legislation to do the job, which he believed should be done. There was a strong body of public opinion in favour of local body reform, and certain steps that had been taken since the introduction of the Bill by some local -bodies that had expressed their opposition to the idea fed him to feel that they now recognised the necsssity for reform.
