LOCAL HAPPENINGS.

“He that is free and willingly runs into fetters is a fool.’’ The weekly euchre tournament under the auspices of the Piingaroa Women’s Guild was held in the Foresters’ Hall. Popular winners were Miss A. McDonald and Mr S. McLean. A dainty supper was a feature of a very successful evening. The Manawatu Gorge still shows signs of tho slips which came down as the result of Friday night’s heavy rainfall. One particular spot late on Friday night had to be traversed in low gear, cars going over at a very acute angle, much to the perturbation of their drivers. Y r csterday morning motorists passing along the Pahiatua-Masterton and neighbouring main highways were intrigued to see little huts on the iside of the road from which a man emerged and made entries in a mysterious book. This procedure is to last for a week and is part of the highways tally being taken to determine the traffic on the main roads of the Dominion. The last Dominion wide tally was taken in 1935 and since then motor traffic has increased enormously.
