UNREGISTERED DENTIST. - i Electric Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN. August 25, J u the Magistrate’s Court I' ramk Wheeler was fined £2 for practising dentistry when not registered. It was stated that Wheeler was a dental mechanic employed by a local dentist, but had had prior to the present regulations, 2i> years' experience in the practice of dentistry. The dentist who employed him had been ill for some time and he had an arrangement with another dentist ito visit his rooms daily for operations. On July 15 a man named Barrett had an appointment for extractioins v itli ohloroloral. A doctor was eingaged. but the locum tenetis dentist lutd to leave, and Wheeler commenced the job, the patient- collapsing and dying alter the first extraction. Th > circumstances were fully investigated. the coroner finding that all due care had been exercised in making tihe extraction.
Counsel stated steps were being taken to secure Wheeler’s registraiion. Competent men said his work compared favourably with that of qualified dentists The magistrate said that, the circumstances were special ones. If defendant had been regulnrlv engaged extracting teeth he would liave taken a serious view of the matter.
