RETIREMENT OF MR HENRYS.
JOCKEY CLUB’S TRIBUTE FIFTY YEARS’ SERVICE. Tributes to the long, service given to the Woodville District Jockey Club by Mr. J. E. Henrys as handicapper, were made at the annual meeting of club members on Friday evening. The president said, that they learned with regret that. Mr. Henrys had retired. He had been an old and faithful servant and undoubtedly was the best handicapper south of the line. (Applause.) Mr. VV. H. Gaisford endorsed the chairman’s remarks, adding that Mr. Henrvs had commenced handicapping about. 1888 and his work was soon recognised by other clubs in both islands. A man who could command that respect must have been adept at liis job. His work was without bias and the fact of the number of clubs which recognised and appreciated his work, was definite proof of his worth. The Club had lost a very good man who would be hard to replace. A letter was read from, Mr. P. Armstrong, of Akitio who made reference to the retirement of Mr. Henrys. The writer statedi that it a (Forded him much pleasure as an owner of horses handicapped under Mr. Henrys for over 45 years, to be able to say that, m his opinion, he was oven greater in his capacity of handicapper than Admiral Rous was in England. (Applause.) Replying to Mr. G. Peebles, who suggested that Mr. Henrys be made a life member of the Club, the secretary (Mr. W. A. Lyon) said that a meeting of stewards had. already attended to the matter.
