SOME FACTS FOR “PUZZLED.”

(Correspondence is welcomed on interesting subjects, but we do not necessarily endorse the opinions of correspondents) (To the Editor). Sir,—Your correspondent “Puzzled” makes a curious claim in h s letter in Monday’s “Herald.” He says he “is just an old sport who likes to see lair play in any connection.' ’ All to the good. But the Levin Dairy Company did not- pay out Is 2£ d for butterfat. It paid Is 2.0468 d which is an entirely different matter to Is 2.}d. Then the old sport should notice, and tell us, that the Levin company had over £13,000 invested in interest-bearing securities. It also made a. profit of over £BOO on its farm. The income from both sources is used for swelling its payment for butterfat. And it carried forward from the previous year a certain amount which also went this year to swell its butterfat payment. Finally the old sport who likes to see fair play should remember that the Levin Company is one of the c Idest and has probably one of the most out-of-date butter factories in the Dominion, that it lias been operating for 38 that all the directors allowed for depreciation of premises and plant was £4Bl (.03G3d per pound of butterfat), and that their over-run was 21.43 per cent. This pay-out is beaten by at leastone of the local dairy companies and it is being equalled by several while one Wairarapa, company beats it to tlie tune of per pound. “Puzzled” should know those faots and I am pleased to jvssist him in this direction.—l am. etc. J. G. BRECHIN.
