TELEPHONE CALLS TO “ AWATEA.”

The new opportunity for radio communication between New Zealand telephone subscribers and passengers on the inter-colonial liner “Awatea“ lias been a popular innovation, the total number of calls during the linen’s first round-trip between New Zealand and Australia being 67. On the outward trip from "Wei ling tun to Sydney via Auckland there were 12' calls and on the return journey from. Sydney to Auckland 26 conversations took place of which 20 originated from the “Awatea’’ and five from New Zealand subscribers. In every case speech was reported to be excellent. A great deal e>f interest was taken in this interesting development of telephony and the “Awatea’’ radio opera tews woulcf have been oxtremely busy on the Tiner’s last evening before r* aching port but for the fact that. heavy southerly weather was encountered on rounding Cape Maria. Van Diemen and the activity of many pasci.gers was thus considerably curtailed
