An allegation that vicious blows were struck bj two men who assaulted him at an open-air meeting at Ellerslie on Friday night were made by Mr Brian Kingston, a member ol the Chamber of Commerce and a wellknown solicitor. Mr Kingston said that he was broadcasting the speeches from a motor truck equipped with five loudspeakers to a crowd of upwards of 130. Two men attempted to pull from the tiuck a placard with the words, -‘Vote for Fred Doidge.” When he remonstrated lie was punched by two men about the head, and when he- tried to climb back on the truck he l was pulled down by three men. lie sought police assistance, but by the time two constables arrived the assailants had disappeared. When the scuffle took place Mr Doidge, the National candidate for Manukau, was addressing; a meeting in another part of the electorate. G. Osborne, Labour candidate in the Manukau bv-election, at Tepapapa. ‘‘l have made appeals from every platform during my campaign asking Labour supporters to givci my Nationalist opponent a fair and impartial hearings” said Mr Osborne. “I ask again that the /same courtesy should foe extended to the National campaign as to my own. Supporters should refrain from any hostility which would definitely injure the platform of the Government and myself.” Mr HARGEST’S PROMISE. AUCKLAND. Hargest, M.P., for Awarua, addressing an open air meeting at Onehunga. “The National Party got a jolly good hiding at the- last elections,” Mr Hargest added, ‘‘but it would rise up and fight again, and, win or lose, would fight right to the end.
