THE CRIPPLED “MATUA."
ARRIVES FOR REPAIRS IN-N.Z. Electric Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND. Last Night. Aided by two he ads alls luade out of deck awnings and set on the foremast the Union Company’s motorship Matua. with her port propellor and rudder damaged; returned from Rorato-nga to Auckland in 9 days, arriving here this morning. Her average speed was between 8 and 9 knots. When the ship was leaving Aitutaki about 8 p.m. on September 15th the port Quarter struck a submerged coral. The impact was so slight that few passengers noticed it. The .‘•hip then returned to Rarotonga leaving 10,000 cases of oranges at A tin and Mauka and left Rarotonga on. September 16. A strong north-easterly gale was encountered yesterday but the ship ran before it carrying both sails. Her 6150 cases of oranges and 300 boxes of tomatoes were landed in perfect condition. Alter discharge the ship is to dock for repairs.
