EIGHT O'CLOCK CLOSING.

AT telegraph offices

. ° s‘h)ck closing on Saturday uigiit is being adopted for telegraphic business at fourteen post offices in the Dominion where the house of attendance * lave been until 9 p.m. Ih:s change comes into force on Saturday next, July 18th, and follows an investigation of the telegraphic business offering between 8 and 9 p.m. at the fourteen offices concerncd. It was found that the attendance of the staff was not justified by the amount of service which the public required during that time, the number of messages averaging onlv 39 lor each Saturday night during May jor the whole of the offices remaining open until 9 p.m. There is another indication of the changing nature of the communicate”l business handled by the Post Uitice, for while the telegraphic branch was almost idle during the period under notice, the telephone exchanges were busy. The curtailment of hours does not reduce facilities for communication in New Zealand owing to the extensive nature of telephone facilities provided duringthe whole 24 hour sof the day. I he offices affected by the change are: Auckland, Christchurch, Duned"i, Gisborne, Grevmouth, HasCngs, Tnvercargiil, Mastcrton, New Plymouth, Palmerston North. Tiraai" Wanganui, Wellington and W estport.
