AUCKLAND'S DEFENCES.
AN URGENT MATTER. Electric Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, Last Night. Questions affecting the defences of Auckland were discussed among other matters at an informal conference of representatives of suburban authorities which had been called by the Mayor of Auckland, Hon. Ernest Davis, for the purpose of giving preliminary consideration to a proposal for the establishment of a permanent metropolitan committee in accordance with the recent decision of the City Council. As an outcome of the deliberations, it was decided to send to the Prime Afin T ster a signed statement setting forth the combined views of those present and asking the Government to consider as a matter of urgency the question of strengthening the defences of Auckland so as to provide adequately against jjossiblo invasion in the future. The text of the statement is not available, for when interviewed Air Davis said he could make no statement on the question beyond confirming that the discussion had taken place and that a memorial ariisng out of it would be forwarded to the Prime Alinister.
