OCEAN PHENOMENON
CRATER DISCOVERED AT SEA. (Received 12.45 p.m.) , United Press Assn —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. CAPETOWN, June 15. The liner Athlone Castle discovered a tremendous crater with a pinnacle in the centre, in the ocean bed five miles off the Natal coast. The echo sounder had recorded a flat bottom at 120 fathoms when suddenly the needle recorded a depression which developed into, precipitous fall and the needle ran off the chart. Consequently the depth was not recorded ; then there was a perpendicular rise until a minute later when an even sea bottom was reached.
