MEN IN HOPELESS POSITION.

MELBOURNE BOATS AIANNED. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, February 10. Although the Boilermakers, Shipwrights and Amalgamated Engineering Union was invited to a conference of federal unions to discuss the shipping strike no representatives attended to-day, which indicates that they are not interested in the strike extension. The conference discussed the rejection by the seamen of the owners’ terms and decided to again approach the owners at another conference. All cargo services and the main passenger services are now restored with licensed crews. There are no* vacancies for unionists on any Alelbourne ship. The Attorney-General (Air Alenzies) said to-day that of 2320 positions rendered vacant by the strike 1780 were filled by volunteer* and many men were waiting to fill the 509 remaining positions. Of 112 vessels, rendered idle in all ports 93 had been recommissioned. Regulations giving permanent preference to volunteers would be gazetted in a few days.

SEAMEN HOLD UP MONOWAI. Electric Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND. Last Night.

The departure of the Monowai for Sydney was delayed for over an hour owing to trouble with the crew. With 403 passengers, mail and cargo the vessel was ready to sail at 5.30 p.m. The* crew, however, refused to take tfie vessel to seat until they had discussed the case of one of the* men who had been paid off late in the afternoon. The* discussion continued in the forecastle until 6.40 p.m. when the men decided to allow the* vessel to sail.

WANG AN ELLA BLACK LISTED. WELLINGTON. February 10. There was no response to the call for labour to-day on the Wanganella which arrived from Sydney last night. The crew is discharging the cargo. The dispute is believed to be due to the fact that the Wanganella has a licensed crew. It is believed that the Wanganella will be able* to leave to-day for Alillorc! Sounds.
