The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1936. RE-SEALING IN THE BOROUGH.

At the December meeting of the Pabiatua Borough Council the Main Highways Board placed before the Councillors a suggestion that they should co-operate with the latter body in a re-sealing programme for the Main Street, the surface of which is very uneven and corrugated, and it was pointed out in the letter that the works programme which involved the first resealing job yet done in New Zealand under a Highways subsidy, would be of much value to the Council and moreover would prove a guide for future work. The Council had quite a long discussion over the matter and several councillors considered that the Council should rot have to pay out so much money for au experiment, but the deputy-Mayor (Mr S. K. Sjiddells) who. was in the chair on this occasion, remarked that the Council would benefit in the long run if the work proved to be the success it was and it would doubt less save money m the future. After being held over from this meeting the proposal was subsequently approved at the next, and in a short while we will see the work put in hand. Recently, a bitumen expert of the Shell Oil Company, passed through Pahiatua, and when the proposed plans were made known to him he expressed the opinion that the Armour Sealing process which w ill be used for the work is entirely satisfactory, and moreover was well suited lor the class of job to l>e undertaken. In support of this statement he pointed out that the Mt. Bruce road was dressed with large chips after the original coating of tar was put down, and when this dressing was disturbed the whole surface became full of corrugations. The Armour sealing process was then adopted last year, and had given a splendid surface, which demonstrated its particular adaptability for coping with road waves. He explained also that the road around the Porirua Harbour had been treated in the same way, and was also, proving a success. Hi view of this information our Borough Council should have no qualms about spending the ratepayers' money on. the undertaking for the engineer in question is a man of undoubted ability and long experience in this class of work.
