RANGATIRA'S DAMAGE.
LARGE HOLES IN HULL. Electric Telegraph—Press Association WEL LX N GT( )N. February 4. V rough estimate of the extent of the damage to the inter-island steamer Rnngatira’s bottom has now been made by the divers and the work ot patching the holes is well in hand. When this is completed sho will be docked. Mr J. \Y. Matthewson, general manager of the Union Company, said to-day that he could not sav when that would be clone. The principal injuries that had been located by the divers were a large rent in the bottom of number one hold- running loro and aft for a distance, of 12 feet and a number of other holes in the bottom of number two hold. Those holds wore being blocked temporarily and collision mats placed over them to enable the interior to be pumped out. No decision lias yet been made about holding an official inquire into the mishap to the Rangatira. It is explained by the authorities that the final decision rests with the Minister of Marine (Hon. P. Fraser ) who at present is visiting the South Island. Meanwhile the officers of the Marine Department are making preliminary investigations, including i In* taking of statements from those concerned.
The officers’ reports will be sub.mttcl as soon as possible to the -Minister who. it is anticipated, will Ik- ill a position before the end of tins week to decide whether a ma-is-tnate and two assessors should be appointed to hold r.n inquiry into the mishap.
