THE OLYMPIC GAMES.
SECOND EDITION
GERMANY’S POLITICAL MOTIVES,
OXFORD JOURNAI/S ATTACK
(Received 1.30 p.m.) United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, February 5.
The Sun-Herald says that- with the Olympiad’s near approach a controversy is growing in several countries as to whether they should be represented at Berlin, in view of the suspicion that Genhany, despite protests to the contrary, is using the games primarily for political purposes. The Oxford undergraduates journal
“Isis,’’ has joined those objecting to Britain’s participation and in a- leader says: “Sport in new Germany, as Dr. Goebbels declared, is a training for German soldiers, and a prelude to a. more serious contest- on the battlefield. Pledges have been dishonoured and sport subordinated to the needs of war. This will be perverted to furthering the political philosophy that Britain’s participation at Berlin would be an acquiescence in a breach of faith in dragging down sport into the mire of politics. We must voice civilisation’s protest by refusing to participate.”
Meanwhile the Reich’s sports leader has nominated Rudi Ball, a. Jewish ice-hockey star, in the German team surprising and angering the Nazis. Ball’s inclusion was kept dark, the newspapers publishing the entry list without any comment. It will be recalled that the English and American delegates to, the Olympic Congress obtained a, promise from the Germans that the Jews would he given an equal chance in the German team.
