MUCH DAMAGE DONE BY STORM. According to Air W. F. Taylor, managing s< retary to the Tararua Electric Power Board, the storm in the southern area had disastrous consequences, and it is considered in many quarters that the damage* will • >t more to replace than that occasioned in the last earthquake. Air Tayloi writes the chairman of tin* Board as under: "Hukanui. Hainan. Waiwera. Pane. Eketahuna and Kaiparoro suffered badly: Alauriceville probably least of all. We requisitioned two men and a truck from the Bublic Works Department to cope with the emergency. The entire staff was engaged continuously from 9.30 a.iu. on Sunday morning till 9 •• h k on Monday night. Their difficulties were intensified by blocked also tlu* lack of telephone communication. They tried t«> -it through to Alangarainarama at midnight on Sunday and again at daybreak on Monday but could not do so owing to the flooded road. Alany of the reports of breakages could only he communicated hv the settlers coming in ears owing to the breakdown ol telephone lines. The greatest difficulty the engineers met with was the clearing away the trees in the dark on Sunday night, but the staff was greatly ho'pod by settlers throughout the district. There are still reports of breakages coming in.
