New Zealand and Australian meat will probably be affected by a lightning strike at Smithfield on which 3000 shopmen decided shortly alter midnight owing to the alleged delay by Conciliation Board deciding dispute. Fne men claim €4 as the minimum pay for a 44-hour week and overtime pay. The strikers enlivened the morning by community singing accompanied by street musicians, who struck up ‘God Save the King’ 7 at the conclusion of a mass meeting, all doffed their caps and sang the verses with a real fervour of loyalty. No shipments of Australian meat arrived in London over the weekend, the nearest arrival being the Port Gisborne on February 6. » The Australian Associated Press understands that Australian firms to-day despatched large consignments to the provinces but are apprehensive lest the strike spread on to the railway and dock workers. Some Smithfield operators are talking of military convoys for meat unless the strike is promptly settled. The only effect on the Stock Exchange was falls of 6d on Smithfield and Argentine ordinary shares. Smithfield pickets at 3 ami. visited some of the riverside wharves where Smithfield meat was being unloaded and persuaded the dockers to cease work. The pickets did not interfere' at the wharves where supplies for smaller markets outside London were being unloaded.
