PROGRAMME OF WORK

FLOWER GARDEN. Bed out zinnias, salvias, phlox. French and African marigolds, cosmos, portulaca, and other late summer plants. Stake all tall-growing plants, such as dahlias, chrysanthemums, gladioli, Michaelmas daisies, lieleniums, etc-. Plan now for next flowers. Prepare for the* sowing of Canterbury bells, sweet Williams, hollyhocks and carnations. Autumn crocus, scillas, amaryllis and belladonna bulbs should be planted now. Dahlias and chrysanthemums now need special attention. Water is most necessary and occasional top-dressings may be made. Remove all dead blooms from loses, cutting well back. Loosen up the soil round the bushes frequently. A dusting of bonedust will benefit growth. Any plants affected with mildew should be sprayed with potassium sulphide or dusted with flowers of sulphur. VEGETABLE GARDEN. To maintain supplies of beans, keep the plants well watered. This is essential at the present time. Further sowings or dwarf beans and sweet corn can be made. Recently-planted celery and leaks need watering. Plant broccoli, savoys, cabbage and cauliflowers. Spray tomatoes and keep them free from caterpilla/rs. Any ground vacant should bo dug over and planted with lupins, mustard, oats, or other quick-growing crop for cliggingin for green manure.
