JUDGING A SHEEP.
POINTS TO LOOK FOR
Judging competitions for sheep are about to be staged at A. and P. Association Shows in the district and the \\ aurarapa Aiming Farmers’ Club publishes the following data for descriptions and scale of points as laid down by the Southdown Breeders’ Society:
General character and appearance. 10 points. Head: \\ ide, level between the ears, with no sign of slug or dark poll, 8 points. Face: Eull,”not too long from eyes to nose, and of one even mouse colour, not approaching black or speckled ; under jaw light. 4 points. Eyes: Large, bright and prominent, 2 points. Ears: Of medium size and covered with short wool, 2 points. Nick: Wide at base, strong and well set oil shoulders, throat clean, 5 points. Shoulders: Well set, till' top level with the back. 7 points. C-hcst: Wide ana deep, 5 points. Back: Level, with a wide fiat Join. 1<) points. Ribs: AVeli sprung, well libbed up, thick through the heart, with fore and hind flanks, fully developed, 7 points. Rump . Wide and long and well turned, 4 points. 'Tail : Large, and set on almost level with the chine, 4 points. Legs of, mutton (including, ’ thighs) : Should be lull, well let down, and with deep wide twist, 10 point. Wool: Of fine texture, great density, and of sufficient length of staple, covering the whole body, down to the hocks and knees, and right up to the cheeks, with a full foretop, but not around the eyes or across the bridge of the nose. 1() points. Skin : Of a delicate bright punk. 5 points. Carriage: Corky, legs short, straight, and of one even mouse colour. and set on outside of body, 7 points. Disqualifications: Horns, or evidence of their presence: dark poll; blue' skin; speckled face; ears and legs ; bad wool.
Quite apart, from its, value for basing, judgment points the above information should prove of value in the sales ring when purchasing stud sheep.
