The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING THURSDAY, JANUARY 30, 1936. SHUTTING THE STABLE DOOR.
The Pahiatua square gardens have often been admire** oy visitors, and the citizens themselves also appreciate the picturesque appearance of the town, but with all their line appointments and neat surroundings, we consider the Borough Council should take steps to remove the danger constituted by the ake ake hedge surrounding the tennis court square. We admit that the hedge is particularly well grown, and, cared for as it is, makes a fine border around this square but It is a decided danger-zone, and within the past few weeks serious accidents have only just been averted Just a. day or so back we had a case wherein two small cars were involved in a collision, and thankful to say, none of the seven people concerned suffered injury, but this was largely due to good luck. One of the cars suffered vei*3 T extensive damage, however, and before any more horses run from our stable it is our duty to shut the doors. Baby car s in particular are prone to accident at this point, lor the hedge rises some 18 inches clear of the white post and rail fence. Not only rs there danger to and from, cars, but cyclists are liable to fall foul of pedestrians crossing the street, and we suggest Chat even if the hedge. Is not removed entirety it should be cut down to at least four feet from the ground. Such a step would not detract greatly from the appearance of the square and would unquestionably safeguard the various users of lower Alain Street, who are daily confronted, with danger in this section of the town.
