PILOT’S LUCKY ESCAPE.
ROPE LADDER CARRIED AWAY

Coming ashore at. Prince's Wharf from the Federal steamer Huntingdon, which he had piloted into pjort. Captain Hogan, of the Amkland Harbour Board, came near to losing Lis life when a. rope ladder down which he was climbing wa s carried away. Falling about 40 feet from the level of the main deck of the ship, which being only half-laden was high out of the water. Captain Hogan fell into the sea between the wharf and the side of the vessel, where there was a space of no more than two teet.
Fortunately, Captain Hogan did not strike the wharf, and was able to keep himself afloat with the aid of •i lifebuoy thrown to him from the wharf. 'As the Huntingdon was
swinging into her berth, threatening to crush him between her side and the piles, he was hastily towed by a rope from the whari along to the bows of the ship, where he was picked up by a harbour board launch.
