RETURNED SOLDIER'S DEATH.

William Dowell, agtd about 5/, single-, a carjicnter. of Whatoro, was found about 2.30 p.m. at his sister’s residence in Hokianga Road by his nephew lying fulling dressed upon a bed. with a pea-rifle shot wound in the ba-ck of his head. A discharged pea-rifle was found King beside the bed. Deceased wa.s a returned soldier and had been m ill-health. He was discharged on Saturday from the Northern Wairoa Hospital, where he was -treated for chronic arthritis. DARGAVILLE, January 20. Tho Coroner’s verdict wa« in accordance with the medical testimony that, death was due to laceration of the brain caused by a rifle bullet fir- < d at cloi.se range. Evidence was given that deceased had been suffering over a. long period from a recurrence o-f wartime* injuries and was in a. very depressed condition as a result of sever© opei at ions.
