SUBSIDY FOR LIBRARIES.
LETTER FROM SIR A. RANSOM. The secretary of the Woodville Public Library committee, Miss B. Gothard, has received the following letter from Sir Alfred Ransom in reply to representations regarding a subsidy: “I have had pleasure in making inquiries regarding the restoration of the subsidy which until a few years ago was granted to small public libraries. ‘*The Minister of Education, with whom I have conferred, informs me that since the year 1929, it has not been possible to provide funds for this purpose, and although the; question was given careful consideration in connection with this year’s estimates, the financial position is such that restoration ol the subsidy could not be agreed to. T may state, however. that it was recently announced by the Right Hon. the Prime Minister that consideration is being given to a system of assisting country libraries, which system will, in my opinion, be much more helpful than the small subsidy system which formerly obtained. The idea is to make such provision as well < nablo books to be distributed on loan from the General Assembly library on conditions yet to be determined.’;
