AERIAL SMUGGLING.
ARRESTS IN FRANCE. Smuggling by air is the charge laid against a French private aeroplane owner and his friend, a Briton. who are detained by the police at Mantes, near Paris. The two prisoners are M. Jacques Leroy, a professional pilot, of Nogentsur-Maine, who is well known as an organiser of air meetings, and Mr William H. Solt, who is stated by the police to be a publicity agent for a British newspaper.
Suspicious movements of the two aroused police interest. When the ’plane landed after two days’ absence, valises were commandeered from the luggage. On being opened they were found to contain several hundred packets of cigarettes and boxes of cigars of Belgian origin. M. Leroy, when questioned, is stated to have replied: “I am not engaged in smuggling. These cigars and cigarettes 1 bought in Belgium for £l6 to give to friends in Paris.”
“They are worth more than £110,” retorted fiscal officials who had been called to the scene.
