THE NEW PONTIAC.

A CAR DE LUXE. For a couple of years the Pontiac car has not been much before the public .in the Dominion, but this year's model is again being made available. The car is certainly attractive. Stivamlined (although noc aggressive; the car is everything tii appearance that could be desired. A * lines which are carried right over the car to the back. Everything is neatly rounded and there is not an angle in evidence. That general eyesore, the spare wheel, is disposed of y being placed in a recess at the back of the car and this also provides a capacious luggage carrier, a convenience that will be highly appreciated. The solid steel top also is a departure from the fabric- top which will be more serviceable and also it makes the body much stronger. Drumming has been provided against and the car runs perfectly silently. The wind shield is bevelled and “blind spots are conspicuous by their absence. The effect of the bevell give*-, clearer uision and also - ing lights. The interior of the- car is luxuriously finished and most comfortable and the driver’s seat «is adjustable. As might be expected, there are a number of mechanical improvements. There are knee-action front wheels and the action has been stiffened so that the car runs extremely solidly on the road, approximating the rigidity of very much heavier cars, and there are* lion-squeaking rear springs, the leaves being coated with graphite and fully enclosed in steel covers. The braking system has been greatly improved, being on the hydraulic principle and with the brakes entirely d : isi proof. This ensures their full efficiency at all times and tends to much longer life. Electro-plated pistons tin. the engine and silver altoy bearings contribute to that unit running smoothly and witli * little wear. The engine will stay quiet at speeds never likely to be reached by file ordinary driver, and being rubber mounted at five points there is ;1 ' 1 sligb: est vibration undei any condition of running. The ride stabilisers and shock absorbers keep the car on an even keel, even in rounding the sharpest corners. Special cooling for the valves keep them in order foe* a maximum length ol time. The water system is maintained on the cross-flow, which has been found so satisfactory in the past, while an innovation is the air cooling of the electric generator, which will prevent many electrical troubles. Tyres afro larger, giving the utmost cushioning effect. The gear change- is synchro-mesh and automatic starting «is installed. A torn at the driving wheel demonstrates that this car is Leautifiillv easy to handle, and is responsive to t]"H> highest degree, also that its riding qualities are superb. One lias no idea of speed in it and a glance at the speedometer reveals JO miles, when it might easily be imagined that 25 miles was scarcely being exceeded. The car gets away quickly and rides the worst corrugations at any speed with scarcely a perceptible quiver, while if emergency demands it can be stopped very much quicker than the passengers are able to do. although the brakes are smooth and gradual in their effect. The acceleration >1 s a feature. as is also its- pulling capabilities. The new Pontiac is a. car that will command attention, particulalrlv so in that- it is reasonably priced. One of those cars is now on view at Ryan’s Garage. *
