The Pahiatua Herald. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING MONDAY, APRIL 9, 1934. MR BERNARD SHAW.
Of all overseas visitors to our shores of recent years, none perhaps have attracted so much interest and provided such entertaining “copy'’ for journalists as Mr G. Bernard Shaw, the famous author and playwright. Mr Shaw is admittedly a picturesque celebrity, and he is also, original in some of his ideas. He must be thoroughly enjoying himself, judging Tby the receptions he is receiving everywhere. He is besieged by pressmen to give his views on all manner of subjects, and in most instances he obligingly does so. His keen sense of humour has made ibis interviews all the more pleasant. Air Shaw admits tiiat he has enjoyed the very strong limelight into which he has been thrust. It is only natural that in liis triumphal tour of the country wellmeaning individuals should endeavour to obtain from him comparisons of their own town, city, bus'll or rivers with other parts of the Dominion. To many of these interrogations, he has given naive, if not delightful replies. Particularly interesting have been Air Shaw’s views on political questions. These have been supplied with a refreshing candour, especially as regards his observations concerning New Zealand polities. They may not be quite complimentary, but nevertheless they do inspire a, section of the public at least to do a little hard thinking and wonder, if after all, the noted visitor is not so very far wrong in liis deductions. There are some admirers of Air Shaw who contend that ho is 100 years in advance with his views on various problems. If ho lias caused thoughtful New Zealanders to cogitate a little extra in connection with the peculiar problems of our time, his visit will have proved really beneficial. It can bo said that Air Shaw's impressions of his tour of the Dominion will be widely quoted at Home, and that liis opinions, if not altogether to our liking, will nevertheless receive a. fair share of appreciation.
