The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING MONDAY, MARCH 12, 1934. CHANGED CONDITIONS.

In • the great changes which are- taking place in the economic world, Mr Walter Elliot, .British Minister of Agriculture, in a recent address as Hector to the students of Aberdeen University, pointed out- that Britain has been taking steps to meet the new conditions. Sfhe has imposed tariffs on foreign manufactures in order to protect her own industries, and Mr Elliot is busily at work endeavouring to reorganise British agriculture on new lines which will rescue it from the depression caused by the unlimited importation of foodstuffs. The methods he is adopting may not meet our desire altogether, and we have to adapt ourselves accordingly. We must continue to depend upon our export trade, and make our plans as far as possible fit in with those of Britain. The remedy for the existing state of affairs is either to reorganise the whole world at once, which is impracticable, or to organise the separate units, and gear them up to each other as soon as time and hard thinking permits. There are numerous ideas for the betterment of trade, but upon those that will foster closer relationship with the Mother country, depends very largely our trade salvation.
