After all the statements contained m the annual reports of meat and produce boards, it comes as a surprise to learn that there is a lack of advertising N.Z. products at Home. The people of this country have always been led to believe that the system of advertising adopted in the English provinces was effective. Mr \V. H. Jackson, an ex-Mayor of Masterton, is one of a number who have recently returned from a visit to the Old Country who complain that greater publicity is needed in order to promote the sales of our produce. Mr Jackson was amazed to find the disadvantages under which New Zealand meat was marketed. It was not labelled or sold as such. The Masterton visitor was at considerable pains to ascertain the real position in regard to the marketing of produce from this Dominion. He discovered that it was a general practice to blend New Zealand hutter with butter from other countries and market it as Empire butter. In Birmingham (he saw a. splendid display of butter labelled “New Zealand.” It was gratifying to learn that in this particular instance the firm sold hundreds of tons of New Zealand butter. Against this, however, it was very disappointing for Mr Jockson to find that in all the stores he visited he not once saw New Zealand cheese labelled as such. These facts go to prove the handicap our produce is laboui’ing under, and the manner in which the market is being exploited. It is very evident that despite all the agencies at work and the periodical trips Home of emissaries of the New Zealand farmers, there is still room for considerable improvement in the effort to obtain much better prices for their produce.
