The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING TUESDAY, JANUARY 2, 1934. BUILDING ACTIVITY.
According to the December monthly abstract of statistics, the value represented by building permits issued in the larger towns during November the latest returns available—was £264,596, an increase of 1.8 per cent, over the October total. During the past three months the value of building permits issued has been considerably in advance of monthly totals earlier in the year—a reflection of the stimulus given to the building industry by the Unemployment Board’s building-subsidy seeheme. A particularly noteworthy feature disclosed by' the November returns is the increased number of permits issued tor new' dwellings; permits for 264 new dwellings of a total value of £178,646 being issued during that month. During each of the last four months the number of permits issued for this class of building has exceeded 200—a pleasing contrast to the position earlier in the year; the number issued m June, for example, being only' 47. While the total value of building operations represented by permits issued during last month is stmll considerably below the- monthlyaverage in 1929 and the years immediately preceding that year, it must be remembered that building-costs have also declined, so that an equal total value now would represent a considerably greater volume of building. Even when this factor is taken into account, however, building activity appears to be still much below-norma-i, the average monthly value of permits issued during 1926-29 being £700,000, while on two occasions during those years monthly totals of oven £1,000,000 were recorded.
