ST. ANDREW.
St. Andrew, a fisherman by trade, was the first of the twelve' apostles called. He does not figure largelv in the New Testament narrations, lie is believed to have suffered martyrdom about A.D. 70 after a preaching tour in Greece and the surrounding country. His connection with Scotland (he is that country’s patron saint) is supposed to date from the fourth century, when St. Regulus took there* some relics of the saint, although historians differ as to tin* date and some say it. was in the 7th century. St. Andrew’s cross of martyrdom ; s a white saltire on a blue ground. Russia, in the days before- it spurred all saints, used to treat St. Andrew with great veneration, since he is supposed to have been the first to preach the Gospel there. The Russian Order of St. Andrew was founded by Peter the Great in 1698 Tt was a most coveted decoration, being confined almost exclusively to those of Royal blood.
