SHORTS FOR TENNIS.
AUSTRALIAN VISITOR’S VIEWS
Electric Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, December 29. Any New Zealand women who have a secret desire to play tennis in shorts but lack the courage to challenge established custom need not hope for a lead from the Australian women’s tennis team, 'phe visitors make concessions to the modern spirit by playing without stockings and in backless 1 rocks, but their luggage does not include the shorts which have been the subject of so much controversy in other lands. The manager of the team. Miss N. Lloyd, disposed of the vexed question of shorts in two sentences in an interview this morning. “It is the woman's duty to look as attractive as possible on all occasions. Shorts do not tend to that aspect.” Miss Lloyd mentioned that a few players in Victoria and Queensland had adopted shorts. In Brisbane. Mrs M. Molesworth, who visited New Zealand with the last Australian women’s team two seasons ago had pioneered the new garb, and in Melbourne, where the junior players were stronger than in New South Wales, shorts had been fairly popular. It was only at the end or last year that the stockingless vogue had been adopted in New South Wales.
