KEEN DEMAND IN* AUSTRALIA. United Press Assn.—By ElectricTelegraph—Copvright. MELBOURNE, September 19. A keen demand existed from the opening of the wool sales. An offering of 10,000 bales was made. Merinos and comebacks were 55 per cent, higher than at the opening of the sales jit this time last year. Fine crossbreds were 50 per cent, up, and lialfbred 40 to 45 per cent. A Yimall lot of the coarser grades were 25 per cent, dearer. The Continent and Japan secured the bulk of the offerings, which were in light condition and included soft handling wool from the R iverina. Leading prices were 21 \d for fleece, lSd for comebacks. Practically all wool offered was sold at 50 per cent, above last season’s opening sales. The top price of 21 fd was secured for a small lot of AAA from the Laverton district. Bradford was the strongest operator. followed by France and Japan. The State s clip this season is estimated at about 205,000 bales. PERTH. September 19. A total catalogue of 24,000 bales was submitted and almost all was sold. Values were equal to Adelaide sales on September 7 and 8, and 25 per cent, above the Perth rates at June sales. SYDNEY SALES. At the wool sales to-dav, 13,079 hales were offered, of which 11,9°9 were sold at auction, 1591 being sold privately. 1 here was keen general competition, and values maintained their recent high levels. Yesterday s top price in the wool sales was 23d lor greasy merino paid by Yorkshire for 23 bales of aether fleece from the Moree. 1 lie best prices for all descriptions at yesterday’s wool sale were: Merino, 23d per lb ; broken fleece, I9d ; lambs, 18d , pieces, lies, 12jd ; locks, Sd : comeback fleece, 18d; crossbred fleece, 16'd.
