The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 6, 1933. THE MINING BOOM.

The reports of allegedly rich gold finds has lifted the hamlets in Central Otago, to a prominence they have not enjoyed for decades. Warnings have been issued to intending investors of the risks they are taking in indulging rash speculations. The exploiter has been at -work. The public need to be very wary that they do not become the victims of wild cat schemes. Mr A. H. Kimbell, Undersecretary of the Mines Department, paid a visit recently to Central Otago. He said that in consequence of the additional large number of applications which have been made for prospecting licenses in the Clutha Valley he had visited the locality in order to make himself genei ally familiar with the position. Whilst in Cromwell a number of the applicants v-ith rights on the Cromwell Flat, interviewed him, when he seriously stressed the absolute necessity of reducing the prices asked by them for options. He pointed out to them that in the interests of the mining industry the Mines Department was taking steps to ensure that the public would be assured of a fair run for their money. Many of them, when ihe position was explained by him, agreed with the view that excessive prices should not he asked for options by the applicants for mining rights on the Cromwell Flat. On the W ay back to Dunedin Mr Kimliell inspected the sliatt sinking operations

at Wether stones, and was impressed with the work which is being carried out there. He also visited two or three other mines. His visit will probably have a good effect.
