LYTTELTON BY-ELECTION.

SECOND EDITION

MR. RANSOM'S DEFENCE. REASON FOR PART IN CAMPAIGN. Electric Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. An answer ta the criticism for his participation in the Lyttelton by-elec-tion campaign was made by Hon. E. A. Ransom in an address yesterday. The Minister said he wished to make it clear that all regretted the sad circumstances that had given rise to the election and also make it clear he was not in the electorate for the purpose of fighting the late member’s widow who was held in high esteem throughout the electorate, but as a Cabinet Minister lie felt it his duty to explain the points of the Government’s policy. “We have never attempted to gain popularity by our administration,”’ said the Minister. “We were out to lift New Zealand from the mire and because of that I'm afraid we're not very popular to-day. That doesn't matter, however, so long as we are doing the job right.”
