The first round of match play in •the Australian women’s golf championship provided some surprises, with the defeat of Misses Macleod and Tolhurst and Mrs Alex Russell. Mass Tolhurst had not quite recovered from her illness. Miss Kernott defeated Mrs Russell, 6 and 5; Mrs Jiodgshun defeated Miss Lascelles, 5 and 4; Miss O. Kay defeated Miss P. Jones, 4 and 3 ; Miss Nankivell defeated Miss Peggy Nankivell at the 19th j Miss B. Claisford defeated Miss Susie Tolhurst, 3 and 2; Miss Perry defeated Miss Shirley Tolhurst, 3 and 2; Miss O. Lefebvre defeated Miss Sale, 2 and 1 ; Miss Joan Hammond defeated Miss Mona Macleod, 8 and 7. Mrs Dodgshun remarked at the finish: ‘T. am the solitary ‘Mrs’ left in the event.” The quarter-finals will be played to-morrow. AMATEUR FOURSOMES. MELBOURNE, September 4. The amateur foursome championship on the Royal Melbourne links resulted: First round: O. Fawcett (New South Wales) and A. Jackson (Victoria), 74; E. Apperly (.New South Wales) and H. Hattersley (New South Wales), 78; S. Morpeth (Victoria) and Mi. J. Ryan (Victoria), 78; A. Wood (Victoria) and V. Gullick (Victoria), 78. PROFESSIONAL EVENT. MELBOURNE, September 4. A professional purse stroke event at the Royal Melbourne course resulted as follows: W. Bolger (New South Wales), 69-74-143; A. IV. East (New South Wales), 78-72-150; C. Gray (New South Wales), 76-74-1*50; E. W. Naismith (Victoria.), 76-74-1.50; M. L. Kelly (New South Wales) returned a record 69 in the first round.
