The Pahiatua Herald. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1933. A SOCIAL SCOURGE.

The comments made by a Christchurch magistrate at an inquest on a child a few days ago as the result of certain unpleasant revelations will be endorsed by all those who take any interest at all in social welfare. The case revealed some shocking if l.ot amazing features, and it is incredible that such a state oi affairs should exist in a country like Xe.r Zealand. The magistrate, in the course of his remarks, pointed out that the case afforded another illustration of the necessity of action being taken by the Government to deal with what must be regarded as a social scourge. It is surprising that humanitarian organisations do not impress upon Government the desirability of acting upon the report of the Commission which took lengthy evidence several years ago and made certain recommendations. There are numerous Women’s Societies in the country, but with one or two exceptions their voice is seldom heard in the matter. The- unemployment- distress must have brought to light numerous instances of social misfits who should be segregated. In view of the criticism of the Magistrate (Mr Mosley) the Public Health Department should be stirred to activity, and endeavour to remedy a menace to the people.
