THE WORST THING.

FREE MARKET ADVISED. The opinion that a quota would be one of the worst things that could fall on New Zealand was expressed by the chairman of directors of the Mauriceyille Dairy Company, Mr V. K. Lemberg, speaking 'at the annual meeting of shareholders of the company. The country has been advised to produce more and go in for mass production, he raid, and had been told time and time again. that the salvation ef the farmer in New Zealand was to make two blades of grass grow where only one grew before. That had come to f*ass, but they were now confronted with the position that they were producing too much. How to quit the surplus produce would become a major problem. Mr Lemberg said that New Zealand consumed 401 b of butter per head, and this he thought could not bo increased to any great extent. The Danes consumed 121 b per head, and much margarine, hence restriction issues to them could not present the same difficulty. The Ottawa Conference had kept restriction back for three years, and in that respect had done much good for New Zealand. They had another two years to run, and before that time was up Mr Lemberg suggested, as a solution for restriction, that New Zealand’s policy should be to let Britain have a free market into the Dominion as New Zealand had a free market into Britain.

Mr Lemberg considered that the coming season held out brighter hopes for the future, and that some improvement was definitely in sight. A rise in prices was anticipated, he added, but that would largely depend on several factors.
