The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING MONDAY, SEPTEMRER 4, 1933. THE PRIME MINISTER.

The visit of the -Prime Minister (Mon. G. W. Forbes) has afforded him an excellent opportunity of studying President Roosevelt’s great national recovery drive. According to the cables, Mr Forbes has been much interested in the plan, and he has been able to obtain first-hand information. There is a good deal of conjecture as to the opinion he has formed on the matter and whether he considers a similar scheme would be of benefit to New Zealanders. The Labour Party have expressed views to the effect that it would welcome any such move in- order to alleviate unemployment distress. Mr Forbes will upon his arrival be plied wit i questions concerning the experiment in the United States, but he will probably give a cautious leplv. In any case, it is perhaps rather early yet to make a definite pronouncement. The trade position of New Zealand is such that she will have to adept a policy of wait and see. If the American experiment should prove successful, it will no doubt be immediately adopted in Britain and European countries generally. In the meantime students of industry in this country will follow very closely President Roosevelt's programme of shorter hours, wages, and price levels. Mr Forbes’ comments on the recent World Conference are not likely at this stage to prove of much interest as the assembly proved very disappointing in practical achievement.
