BRITAIN’S STARTLING CONTRAST.
The following figures seem to justify the opinions that the position is improving: From 1931 onwards, as compared with 1929, the last semi-normal year, there was a very substantial decline in the volume of exports in .all the main countries.
Although the United Kingdom experienced that decline in 1931 the 1932 figures were no worse, in startling contrast with all otner countries.
United Kingdom production figures showed a 16 per cent, decline in 1931 and a 17 per cent, decline ill 1932; exports showed a 37 per cent, decline in volume in 1931 and a 37 per cent, decline in volume in 1932. That was compared with 1929.
In France production had slumped from 27 per cent, in 1931 to 40 per cent, in 1932, and exports from 14 per cent, ill 1931 to 41 per cent, m 1932. In United States production had slumped from 32 per cent, in 1931 to 46 per cent. in 1932, and exports from 33 per cent, in 1931 to 48 per cent, in 1932. The decline was experienced in 1931 by all countries alike, but this country was in startling contrast with other countries in that the decline was no greater in 1932 than in the previous year. Alore employment : In addition, there was a very substantial improvement in employment during May, the fourth successive month of improvement since the low point at the end of January.
