The Pahiatua Herald. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING MONDAY, AUGUST 21, 1933. THE UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES.

Despite? the various efforts which are being made to stem the tide of unemployment the figures show no reduction. The registrations have now reached the highest oii record—an increase of over 3000 being reported as eonijiared with a month ago. The Unemployment Board had made special arrangements to surmount the difficulty during the winter season, but the latest returns show that in spite of their attempts, the depression has reached the worst stage yet recorded in the Dominion. The building subsidy scheme is expected to give a good deal of employment and the figures regarding the unemployment registrations should ultimately disclose a substantial drop. There will also be the usual seasonal occupations. The Government have in hand a number of big building contracts and the cities should accordingly benefit. Recent reports from Home stated that there had been a good improvement in trade competitions and general industrial activity. If these continue, New Zealand will in due course benefit.
