PEDIGREE BREEDING
WILL DEFY CRITICISM. There is no doubt that pedigree breeding is sufficiently well established as a system to withstand all the various criticisms that are levelled at it, and it is firmly believed that it has a still greater future before it, not only in the improvement and development of ordinary stock, but for the purpose of scientific breeding for specialised purposes, says the Live Stock Journal. No doubt in the future more will be required -of it, and it will have to he accompanied by records of performance. Pedigree plus performance will deservedly bear a greater value than a pedigree without. Pedigree must be brought into line with the seeds of the consumer, and the type of animal must be bred in conformity with the requirements of our market. Pedigree is decidedly necessary to the future of the live stock industry, which is tow the most important branch of farming. It is to pedigree only that we can hope for that improvement in our common stock which is so long overdue, and we must remember the old adage that “a good beast is a good beast, come how he may.” But it is to pedigree alone that we must look for a succession of good beasts.
