FURTHER ECONOMIES

CONSIDERATION BY CABINET. Electric Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, April 5.

Referring to-day to his statement at the Chamber of Commerce dinner last night on the necessity for further economies, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes said it was obvious that, owing to the marked fall in the revenue of the country, due very largely to the drop which had taken place -in the price of butter, it would be necessary during the coming financial year to put into operation further economy measures. “It is essential,” said. Mr Forbes, “that the country should remain solvent, and the only way to achieve that is to reduce expenditure in keeping with the reduction of revenue.” Asked if he could indicate what form the economies would take, Mr Forbes said that it was too early -yet to give details, but there was no doubt that there would have to be a cutting down of departmental expenditure, which would, naturally, involve a reduction in departmental services.
