WOMENS DIVISION

THE PAHIATUA BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING. The recital of “the women’s creed” opened the annual meeting of the Pahiatua. branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, held yesterday afternoon in the County Council Chambers. Mrs J. D. Piper presided over a represex tative attendance. The secretary (Mrs J. Gibson) read the annual report, which was as follows : “In spite of the prevailing depression we have every reason to • consider this, the report of the fourth year, very satisfactory. “It is to be regretted that the monthly meetings are not better attended and more- interest taken in this splendid work for the afflicted and needy cases in the district. The membership now stands at 73, several having left the district, and a number joined up with new branches formed in their own districts. “During the past year Miss Cole, the Bush housekeeper, has filled 11 positions in this district and elsewhere. Eight positions have been hired by casual housekeepers, ail having given every satisfaction. During the year the branch lias distributed 48 parcels of food and clothing, also 18 bundles of books to Flock House and other boys who live in lonely districts. The Branch has contributed the sum of £ls between the community chest, house-keepers’ fund and \Vairoa. earthquake relief fund ; while the sum of £l3 has been spoilt on needy and .other work. The Wairarapa Provincial Council is endeavouring to equip two boy trainees for Flock House per year and Pahiatua has donated their quota towards this fund, being £2 10s. There has been a fair demand for copies of the Household Guide, between 30 and 40 copies being sold. During the past year we have held five very successful social afternoons. Splendid addresses were given by the following: Rev. Dr. Gibb ( Dominion President of the League of Nations), Mr Frank White (Tane), on “World Wide De pression. its causes and solution.” In September a. combined* rally with the men’s division was held and provecl a great success both socially and financially. were also given by Miss A. Barrel*, Dominion Vice-President of the Women’s Division of the Fanners’ Union, who gave a. splendid address on '‘The Problem of the Mentally Defective.” The committee feel that these lectures are a great uplift, both spiritually and socially. Owing to doubt whether coenfei ence .would he held this year, until shortly before. we were unable to send a delegate* to Dominion Conference. Whenever possible our President, vico-Pre-sident and some of the committee have attended the quarterly meetings of the Housekeepers’ Auxiliary held in Palmerston North and Masterton.

“During the year a gift shop was hold, which was not supported as well as was expected. Owing to the splendid efforts and generosity of several members of the committee a. splendid sum of money has been raised. Consequently the balancesheet shows a much higher balance than last year. The committee wish to thank all those who have assisted m any way during the past year, the members who maintained their interest and helped keep the flag dying, the Pahiatua County Council for the use ot their assembly hall for the month 1 v meetings, the editor of the Pahiatua He rail d for his willingness at all times to bring before the public anv activities of the branch.
