FORMER HEADMASTER ILL. (From Our Own Correspondent ) BALLANCE. This Day. The friends of Mr D. Mcßae, formerly headmaster of the Ballance School, will regret to learn that he has been compelled to enter the Christchurch Hospital for medical treatment. PROMINENT SETTLER SICK. Ma- F. *W. Bibby, of Mangahao, who has not been enjoying the best of health for several' months, is confined to his bed. SUCCESSFUL RELIEF DANCE, i- *5 dance, in aid of earthquake refer hmds, was held in the Ballance Hall last Friday evening, as the result of which the sum of £5 16s, including a donation of £1 from the Hall Committee, was raised The residents are to be complimented on the fact that all expenses m connection with the function vyere met by them. Excellent voluntary music was contributed by Mrs 'C. Holdaway and the Misses T. Jones P Poiglase and A. Croad. Mr C. Wilton made a capable M.Ct The ladies supplied a bountiful, supper in their usual well-known style. During an interval, Mr Wilton took the opportunity to thank the ladies who generously supplied the music and the supper, also the HW _ ommittee for their donation ot £l. A most enjoyable function was brought to a close about 1 a.m. I lie arrangements were carried out by the School Committee and their wives. and the headmaster, Mr R. G. McKenzie. PLEASANT SCHOOL SURROUNDINGS. INSPECTOR’S TRIBUTE. The local school grounds are verv pleasing to the ey-e at present, and are a distinct credit to the headmaster and scholars. During the summer months several new” flower beds have been laid out and the lawns extended considerably. On a recent visit to the school, Mr F. C. Brockett, the Education Department’s agricultural inspector, reported that the grounds and gardens were the best kept of any country school in the Wellington district. v FORMER RESIDENTS TRAPPED IN BUILDINGS. ' Former local residents who were trapped in fallen buildings in Hastings were Mr D. Frame and Mavis MoKeown. Mr Frame was in the library at Hastings, and managed to crawl out after a few hours, receiving many cuts and bruises. Ma vis McTTeown was entombed in a High School' for a d-v in ' night..
